April Van Brunt

I was born in Atlanta and grew up in a family that was always plucking guitar strings, painting murals, or weaving stories. Still, I didn’t pick up a paintbrush myself until after my mother’s passing in 2019. Not long after, my family and I moved to Chattanooga—just in time to find ourselves hunkered down at home during the pandemic. Like so many, I lost my day job and began homeschooling my children. Painting at my tiny kitchen table became my lifeline, a way to create beauty from ashes.

My work continues to explore themes of healing, memory, and everyday wonder. I find inspiration in the small stories our surroundings tell—the fleeting light on a leaf, the quiet color of an ordinary morning.

On a good day, you’ll find me tucked away in my studio in those first still hours, sketching new ideas or bringing a piece to life. The rest of my time is spent outdoors with children in Forest School or chasing my own flock of kids and chickens through the backyard.
